About Arlisa H. Powell

 

 

Celebrating over 25 years as a music educator in Newport News Public Schools, Arlisa Harrison Powell earned a Bachelor of Science  Degree in Scondary Music Education with a concentration in vocal music from Old Dominion University and is currently the choral director at Denbigh High School (her Alma Mater), and Passage Middle School.  She has also served as choral director at Warwick High School and Reservoir Middle School and as a general music educator at  John Marshall Elementary,  Achievable Dream Academy, Dunbar Erwin Elementary, Gildersleeve Middle School, and Nelson Elementary.  She was awarded Teacher of the Year in 1992 and in 2002.  She is a member of NAFME(National Association for Music Education),  VCDA (Virginia Choral Director's Association), NEA (National Education Association), and VEA (Virginia Educators Association).  In addition, she has served as the Vice President of the Hampton Roads Chapter of NASPAAM (National Association for the Singing and Performance of African-American Music).  For years, Arlisa has been the owner of Musically Yours Private Piano Instruction serving youths and adults in her community.  In addition, she has served as the pianist and assistant to the Minister of Music at First Baptist Church, Denbigh for over 35 years. Mrs. Powell is committed to excellence in instruction and is dedicated to quality music education both in the public school and in her community.
